Mexican Fishing License

Fishing License in Mexico: How to Obtain, Cost, and Key Details

Do I need a fishing license in Mexico?

Yes, all persons engaging in recreational fishing in Mexican waters require a fishing license issued by the Comisión Nacional de Acuacultura y Pesca (CONAPESCA), regardless of whether you are on a private boat, charter, or fishing from shore (in some states).

Typically:

  • Required for fishing from a boat.

  • Not always enforced for shore fishing, but recommended to avoid issues.

Where to buy a Mexican fishing license online:

  1. Official CONAPESCA site (via Baja California Sur government):
    https://www.bcs.gob.mx/fishingsport
This site allows you to pay securely online and print your license immediately.

  2. Alternative secure authorized vendor:
    https://www.mexicanfishinglicenses.com
This is a well-known English-accessible third-party service for ease of payment.

Pricing (2025 rates, approximate in USD):

Note: Prices may vary with exchange rates, slight administrative adjustments, or location of purchase.

Required information for purchase:

  • Full name

  • Passport number (or government ID)

  • Birthdate

  • Dates you intend to fish

  • Payment method (credit/debit card)

Additional important regulations:

✅ Bag and possession limits apply, typically 10 fish per day with specific species restrictions (maximum 5 of the same species, 1 billfish, or 2 dorado/tuna/other larger pelagics per day).
✅ Spearfishing requires a license and is subject to special rules (no use of scuba, only free diving with fins/mask/snorkel).
✅ It is illegal to sell fish caught under a sport fishing license.
✅ In most cases, you do not need a boat permit if you are on a licensed charter; if using your own boat, you may need a separate Mexican boat permit for the vessel.
